jailbirds and yardbirds

DB 7706 .

A remarkable 45 from The Yardbirds with guitarist, Eric Clapton still on board, just prior to the recording of their massive hit, "For Your Love".

Produced by Giorgio Gomelsky. The a-side is a Graham Gouldman composition - later of the Hotlegs and 10CC - the flip-side is an equally great number by James McCarthy and S. Smith (Paul Samwell-Smith) of the original blues rock outfit.

THE YARDBIRDS: EVIL HEARTED YOU from "Evil Hearted You b/w Still I'm Sad" 45 (EMI Columbia) 1965 (UK)

THE YARDBIRDS: STILL I'M SAD from "Evil Hearted You b/w Still I'm Sad" 45 (EMI Columbia) 1965 (UK)

Absolutely smoking track! Still I'm sad probably rates up there for me with Over Under Sideways Down! Can't say enough about the track! Great pick!

Thanks, WZJN. When you listen to "Still I'm Sad" it's so clear the influence it had on everybody from Eric Burdon & the Animals - on "The Black Plague" from "Winds of Change" - to Black Sabbath.

And that's without even mentioning the cinematic end touching on Bubblegum popsters, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich through to Ennio Morricone's more atmospheric scores. Amazing 45. Far superior to "For Your Love", I feel.

The Yardbirds were THE FUCKIN' MASTERS. Love them.

I loved them, then fell out of bed with them, and then fell in love with them all over again! There is clearly some kind of lesson there wanting to be learned...

I love Still I'm Sad. Used to play it all the time when I was very young (about 5 years old). Used to play it to friends in the 80's and say we should form a band and do it Joy Division style. I still think that could work.

Hey, Mick. I can see "Still I'm Sad" working in a Joy Division vein too, oddly enough. It's the intro and rhythm thing, I think. Nice. The vocal too, now you mention it, is remarkably Ian Curtis like. I wouldn't have caught that vibe about it, unprompted.

Good call.
