vince guaraldi: joe cool

"Born in San Francisco on July 17, 1928, Vince Guaraldi graduated from Lincoln High School and then San Francisco State College. Guaraldi was already performing while in college in such venues as the Black Hawk and Jackson's Nook, sometimes with the Chubby Jackson/Bill Harris band, other times in combos with Sonny Criss and Bill Harris. He did minor gigs as well, such as weddings. Guaraldi's first recorded work can be heard on "Vibratharpe," a 1953 release by the Cal Tjader Trio."

WS 1747.

Produced, Written and arranged by Vince Guaraldi. Featuring Carl Burnett on drums; Stanley Gilbert on bass; and Eddie Duran on electric guitar. With Vince Guaraldi on piano and electric harpsichord.

If you're hankering after a funkier "Joe Cool" helping of 70's Guaraldi, check out this older post of Mike's on Art Decade.

Oh Wow! I really didn't know this was available to buy. I loved the Peanuts cartoon (strips and TV series)I hadn't realised the incidental music was out there to buy. Amazon here I come!

Yeah, there's a wealth of Guaraldi in print on Amazon, and a treasure trove of more rare out of print Peanuts related stuff on the web if you have the patience to seek it out.

It's gratifying this post found a good home, peewit. Choose wisely!

I've got some songs from the soundtrack to "A Charlie Brown Christmas" on CD, myself.

The hardcore band JFA (Jody Foster's Army) used to do a cover of "Linus and Lucy" that was pretty cool.

I live a couple of miles from Charles Schutz's house. There are statues of Peanuts characters all over Santa Rosa. The Indiana Hardcore band, The Scunts, used to cover one of these songs. I think they were doing it BEFORE JFA came through town. Indiana leads the nation. Scunts were part of the Zero Boys circle of friends. Good band.

brushback: "A Charlie Brown Christmas" is one of the few seasonal recordings - along with the Ronettes - which doesn't incite the Scrooge in me.

JFA doing a cover of "Linus and Lucy".
Definitely interesting.

That lends a touch of local colour. I can't think of any more agreeable civic monuments than statues of Peanuts characters. I wonder if there is a similar monument to R. Crumb in Cleveland ?

The Scunts, eh ?

By the way, Mike.

Thank you for that original post. It took me by surprise 'cos I'd been long searching for the 70s shit, having rediscovered Guaraldi and falling in love with his considerable talent all over again.
