It was a very hot afternoon here in Glasgow today. A carnival procession sealed off the traffic on Byres Road in the west end the entire day, and people trudged around intoxicated in sandals trying hard to believe they were in Notting Hill or New Orleans. The colours all looked a little tired to me, but that might just be down to the fact I am often a cantankerous old fart.
The best part of the day for me was watching our kids blowing these deafening air horns as we filed Indian fashion down the choked thoroughfare between the Botanic Gardens and Dumbarton Road at the foot of the hill. At £1 a pop, it was a bargain just to see the pained expressions on all and sundry.
I hate loud inconsiderate noise myself at the best of times. But when it\’s pre-adolescents causing the commotion during a carnival the police can\’t really complain. It\’s especially gratifying when the children responsible are, for a change, one\’s own.
