take five

columbia records CS 8192.

Featuring cover art by Neil Fujita, the album comprises all original compositions in a variety of time signatures.

Dave Brubeck
: piano
Paul Desmond: saxophone
Eugene Wright: bass
Joe Morello: drums

Written by Paul Desmond. Wickedly restrained - but flamboyant enough - drumming from Joe Morello in the breaks.

THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET: TAKE FIVE from "Time Out" LP (Columbia) 1959 (US)

Jeez, this is one of my favorite tracks ever, though I feel a bit generic for saying that.

Don't worry about it! This tune, and the playing on it, is perfect. If such a thing exists.

A lot of the time when I'm writing the intro to a post, I feel like I'm slipping into some horrendous FM dj mode... like Clint Eastwood in "Play Misty For Me", I can almost see my hand hitting the fade switch. What can you do ?

This was the only record that stayed on Reading University's Student Union Jukebox from 1979 to 1983. I was not the only one who regularly put it on whilst avoiding lectures

It's one of these great jazz pieces virtually everybody finds something to love about. If someone can't dig "Take Five" I automatically conclude they are either soulless or lying.
