That picture is terrifying!
I've been a huge PT fan for years. They excell at just about anything they tackle. Their most recent album, 2007's Balboa Island, is killer.

It's especially gratifying to get props from a PT fan; we're sadly in a minority. I would rank them alongside Big Star, and that's no small recommendation. Their 70's shit is far better than "SF Sorrow", or their earlier R&B Stones fusion, I feel...
I haven't heard "Balboa Island". Thanks for the tip. I need to get busy checking that out.

By the way... I have just this moment put on a machine wash, and I'm just about to sit down and watch "Diary Of The Dead", the fourth installment in Romero's "Dead" series. "Land Of The Dead" sucked Bigtime - Dennis Hopper should be ashamed - so I hope this one is worth the effort.
Make that the 5th; I'd forgotten about "Day Of The Dead", which was unexpectedly decent.
I heartily agree, Mr. Ib. I believe Parachute is one on TPTs best, I love "Cries from the Midnight Circus" but especially "October 26". Balboa Island has some good tracks, such as "Pretty Beat" & "Mimi" & a great cover of Dylan's "The Ballad of Hollis Brown". I personally think that 2002s Savage Eye is a better offering. I particularly enjoy "I'm Keeping". If you are intereted in getting any of these, let me know & I'll e-mail you the links.
Nate, I haven't heard the reissue of "Savage Eye", although I've long coveted an MP3 I caught on Limewire some years back. I had it labeled (wrongly) as "Sad Eye" - the only song I have off that 1976 LP - but guess what ? It seems it was actually "I'm Keeping" all along.
I'd love to hear this in its entirety. Damn straight.
The song "Sad Eye" is on Savage Eye.

Well. I have to admit; I laughed pretty damned loud.
There is something so wrong about Clowns.....and this picture does nothing to eradicate such prejudice from my feeble imagination. I will sleep most unsoundly tonight.
Tim Curry excelled as a clown in the tv movie adaptation of "It", I always felt. When not downright terrifying, clowns are guilty of making everybody in a three mile radius uneasy as fuck.
Especially those three trippy visitors which intrude on occasion into acid induced hallucinations. I have no idea whether the stuff of them is actually universal, but I suspect so.
I would have commented on the Tim Curry reference alone!
I'm admitting that I know next to minus 10 about PT but your enthusiasm has me looking around - especially for the double album you mentioned earlier.
As to the clowns - peverse pleasure by some who paint those pictures of clowns as demons. Not so disturbing to me, but I do see where someone can get underwear soiling nightmares from them. And Tim Curry did have a way with the role in 'It', didn't he?
Oh, The Pretty Things are truly underrated.
"Sickle Clowns" is a nice title. "SF Sorrow", their four-sided 'opera", is definitely worth investigating as an overlooked "Sgt. Pepper" or "Tommy", but not in the same league as "Parachute".
Brendan did a well-considered piece on the whole psychedelic rock opera theme @ The Rising Storm, some time back, I remember.

I've just ordered Parachute online purely on the strength of this post. I love the track you posted and if the rest of the album is half as good I'll be happy. I'm a sucker for great harmonies.

Parachute is one of the best albums ever made, I believe. I don't think any other Pretty Things release comes close to it in cohesiveness and sheer brilliance. Most gratifying to know this small post prompted you to buy it. Cheers!
Actually it was the ‘The Good Mr. Square/She Was Tall, She Was High’ post that made me order the CD. I was a bit worse for wear last night and scrolled down til I saw the word ‘Parachute’ and started typing, not that it really matters but it puts my comment about harmonies into context.
We all write these blogs as a bit of self indulgence and to raise awareness of the artists we feature (if only Web Sheriff, DMCA etc. could get that into their heads) so I think it’s only right to let a blogger know when he’s succeeded. I was thrilled when someone ordered Bill Nelson’s Chimera because of one of my posts.

My copy of Parachute finally arrived today. That's what happens when you try to save a few pennies by ordering it from a Guernsey based company just before the worst snow for years. Haven't heard it all yet but I like what I've heard so far. Worth the wait!
Good to hear, Mick ; I recently ordered up a data cable to connect my mobile, and after a lengthy period of waiting too, it appears o be completely useless since the manufacturer has neglected to make available any driver software to connect to a mac. I'm fuming!
